Teaching a Child to Save

As early as now, I want my daughter to learn how to save. I believe at her age of 3, she now understands the value of money. Why do I think she understands? First, I’m teaching her numbers; from 1 to 999 (but she’s only comfortable until 199 so far) and sometimes she tries to read out numbers in the thousands. Since she can read the numbers, I explain to her why we buy, or don’t buy for that matter, toys that she calls out for when we go the mall to let her know what expensive and reasonable means.

Because of this, we also want her to learn how to save for things she wants to buy for herself.  We’ve tried to buy her piggy banks but she just isn’t into the whole “piggy” thing.  For this reason, we’re looking into getting personalised money boxes for all of us so she knows that we all try to save up for something we want to buy for ourselves or just to save up for the future.

What better time than now to teach her about money when she received some money gifts from her Godparents last Christmas, right? A great way to boost her counting and saving techniques.

Thanks so much! It’s interesting how she remembers but it definitely makes it easier for me to teach her about money and saving :D Thanks again for your comment! Have a good one!

I teach my sons to save since they were toddler too. After a while it becomes a habit and these are good habits. Happy New Year to you and family. Hope it is not too late to wish, anyway it is still January. Have a great week ahead.
